Balkan road trip – Serbia

Balkan road trip – Serbia

16/05/2021 – Lake Palic, Sombor, Becej, Novi Sad – We arrived to Serbia a week ago and already visited so many amazing places! Started our journey with the centre of Subotica, where the buildings like the Ferenc Raichle’s Palace, Synagogue and City Hall impressed us a lot. Then we had a nice afternoon walk at Lake Palic and visited the amazing Grand Terrace. A legend says that Palic was made of tears, no matter what, this fabulous lake is attracts many visitors from Subotica and even from Hungary. On another afternoon we drove to Sombor, where we loved the town center; this town has managed to preserve the charm of the past, and combined with the spirit of the people, age and different eras that have come and gone through the corners of the streets in the town. The Town Hall is the most impressive building, but it was under refurbishment, so we could see only a part of it (this summer a sign showed they may will finish with). Here you can see lots of magnificent buildings in a beautiful surrounding, with immense historical worth and marvellous architecture. On Friday morning we went to see the famous Market of Subotica, which was just across the street. For us it looked like hundreds of sellers offering the same “top brand” sport clothes but not sure if they are Chinese low-quality ones or the real deal to be honest (they seemed fake to me). We bought only few antique books, the rest products of the market were not in our interests.

On Saturday, we decided to leave our accommodation earlier in Subotica, because we had enough of living in the middle of a building site. We Drove to Becej, which was an easy hour drive from Subotica. We decided to skip the motorway to see the landscape but mostly we could see agricultural fields on the journey. The town is next to the river Tisa (Tisza), where we stopped there for an hour. The town center was like a town in East Germany/Austria for me, the Town Hall and churches around were magnificent. We had a soft drink at a bar in the main squire then a popcorn on a bench, enjoyed the early summer sunshine and the view of this town.

We arrived to Novi Sad early afternoon and just realized, how busy this town is when we tried to find a car park. In our apartment in Zone Red, where you can park free during the night and at weekends but during weekdays you can leave your car only for maximum 2 hours. Not many long stay car parks I found (or those cost a lot), mostly parking with day passes I discovered. The nearly perfect and closest car park we found was located about 15 minutes’ walk from us and costs 95 RSD (0.80 Euro) daily. The address that is taking you there: Trg Marije Trandafil 6, you will see on the side of the road a Park sign and you need to drive in through a driveway and at the end of there is a spacious car park. Charges are applicable on Weekdays between 7am-9pm and Saturday between 7am-2pm. So if you leave your car for days, you just need to send a text message every morning before 7am; texting the number 8215 with your registration number (without space and all capital).

The apartment is a newly refurbished IKEA showroom-style flat, wonderfully comfortable. We love it, but often we can hear the noise of every neighbour so close like they live with us. We hope only at Saturday night we had our noisy neighbours this active; it was almost around 1am when they gone quiet. The location of the flat is super, bang in the middle of the town center, 200 meters from all restaurants, amazing coffee shops and bars. After our arrival, we looked for a place to eat. The closest Vegan restaurant to us was temporarily closed (Bananas Veggie & Raw cuisine) but further away Vege & Vegan restaurant was open! We had an amazing and healthy burger here with freshly pressed lemonade, followed by a cherry chocolate cake (The total amount was only 16 EUR for two). Finally we found an Ice Cream shop opposite to the Pozorišni klub Trema.

For two weeks we are enjoying a city life here, hoping to get to know some new Serbian friends. Tomorrow is our first workday but in the afternoon we will plan to visit some of the many historical buildings this town offer. Close to the town, there are beautiful natural landmarks and Monasteries, so plenty to write about them here.
