How I Quit Smoking Cigarettes – My Story & Practical Tips That Worked

How did I stop smoking? I will share with you in this post

There are countless articles about why smoking is harmful and how to quit. In my opinion, quitting requires a firm decision in your mind. You need a solid reason to win this battle against addiction. Here is my personal story and what helped me succeed.

My Journey with Smoking

I started smoking at 17. I remember being angry with the world and deciding to try a cigarette from my father’s pack. The taste was awful, the smell unbearable, and it made me nauseous. Yet, I smoked whenever I was upset, as a form of self-punishment. When I hung out with friends, I often brought cigarettes and smoked with them. In a way, we were the “cool gang.” My father soon caught me but remained relaxed, even buying me a pack so I wouldn’t steal his cigarettes. Ironically, this caring gesture reinforced the habit.

During college, money was tight, so I smoked less. Later, in my first factory job, smoking and drinking were common among colleagues, and I picked up the habit easily—about 20-25 cigarettes a day. When I moved to the UK at 26, cigarettes were much stronger and four times more expensive, which naturally limited my consumption.

Even with better-paying jobs, smoking remained costly. I switched to electronic cigarettes but often overused them during long night shifts. I craved the same effect as traditional cigarettes, which sometimes caused headaches. Fortunately, I experienced no serious problems, though I later read about accidents caused by e-cigarettes.

Nicotine addiction creates constant cravings, an empty irritating feeling similar to hunger, compelling you to smoke instead of addressing the real need. This leads to chain-smoking habits.

The Turning Point

I was 34 when morning coughing and chest pains finally convinced me to quit. Smoking caused constant stress. You cannot smoke while flying, on public transport, during work, or at appointments. These situations fueled anxiety, always thinking about when and how to smoke. One autumn morning in 2014, I decided: enough. I have not lit another cigarette since.

Tips That Helped Me Quit

  • Change your mindset: stop associating smoking with pleasure or relaxation. Look at the cigarette packaging images or the ashtray and remind yourself what smoking does to your lungs.
  • When tempted, go outside without a cigarette. Use deep breathing exercises (inhale fresh air 6–7 times) to reduce stress without nicotine.
  • Visual reminders: whenever cravings hit, focus on the damage cigarettes cause to your body and lungs.
  • Consider the numbers: smoking kills over 8 million people yearly, and second-hand smoke harms 1.2 million more. Compare this to Covid-19 precautions: you wear a mask to protect life—why not avoid smoking?
  • Visualize the future: imagine your grave in ten years, with your loved ones mourning. Let this motivate you to say no to cigarettes and yes to life.
  • Financial incentive: calculate how much money you spend on cigarettes. Save it instead and reward yourself with a luxury holiday or other meaningful experiences.
  • Health and hygiene: smoking causes bad breath, dental issues, and premature aging. Quitting improves both health and first impressions.
  • Life matters: cigarettes are a slow form of self-harm. Choose life over addiction.
